Who is single-dose IORT suitable for?
Our managed mobile service which can deliver SD-IORT to both NHS and private hospitals in the UK and Ireland is designed to make radiotherapy treatment more convenient and to increase patient accessibility to partial breast radiotherapy.
A typical treatment can be delivered in as little as 8 minutes during surgery which is a big difference compared to the usual 3 to 5 week course of radiotherapy, which involves daily outpatient appointments.
SD-IORT delivers a prescribed, targeted dose of radiation directly to the site where cancer recurrence is most likely to occur. Compared to traditional radiotherapy, SD-IORT protects healthy tissue and organs, such as the ribs, lungs, heart and contralateral breast from receiving unnecessary radiation. Patients have been shown to also experience low rates of serious complications and favourable cosmetic outcomes.
Patient selection criteria
Our strict patient selection criteria have been created by some of the UK’s leading clinicians and respected health professionals who make up our Medical Advisory board. Our patient selection criteria follow ASTRO guidelines for APBI, which have been updated using more recent and relevant publications including the Targit A trial update and Eliot Trials.
ORL’s full patient selection criteria is available here.
